Did you know it’s actually a legal requirement to have eyecare benefit in place at work if you use a computer? I had no idea… well, at least until I looked on my Benefits Communication portal on Boris and saw that eye care vouchers were offered and why.

According to WebMD there is something Called Computer Vision Syndrome which 50-90% of people (and children) who work on computers daily experience.

In a nutshell, your eyes are a muscle and the focusing and refocusing places strain on your eyes. When you look down at some papers and then back and your screen, your eyes refocus. When you go from a dark screen to a light screen, your pupils dilate (which is also a type of refocusing). In addition, when people look at screens they tend not to blink as often as they should and their eyes dry out. While this does not cause permanent damage in the short term, it can cause damage in the long term.

To top things off, after the age of 40 many healthy adults experience something called presbyopia, which is basically the difficulty to see objects up close. This is normal and is not caused by looking at computer screens, but nonetheless requires a visit to the optometrist for a sprightly pair of reading glasses.

While this would normally be an out of pocket expense, it is now covered by your employer, and while most companies have a complicated system to reclaim expenses. Boris easily assists employees with receiving their eye care benefits through the click of a button.
